There’s this little place in L.A. that sells hearty donuts, but they aren’t just famous for their unique donut flavors. They are famous for how they make their donuts, too. The common donuts we have come to love and know are typically fried. But these donuts, including vegan and gluten-free, are baked and steamed instead! So what’s the name of this delectable little place? Say hello to Fōnuts! I had heard about Fōnuts several months ago so this past week, while I was back home in L.A. for a couple of days, I grabbed a friend and we trekked over to West 3rd Street just a few blocks down from The Grove. It’s a small place with a dark awning, and it smells sweet as soon as you walk in. They have a variety of flavors available, even for it being 3 o’clock in the afternoon. I was told that half of their donuts contain almond flour*, so unfortunately due to my nut allergy I will not be able to try those. However, I did make sure to grab three of their popular flavors – red velvet, strawberry buttermilk (my fave!), and blueberry earl grey. I was also told that their cream filled donuts are better eaten that day, so the cream stays fresh and the donut stays moist. I grabbed a chocolate vanilla creamed donut to try it out. They also have a rosemary donut and even a maple bacon donut (which was definitely sold out by 3 pm!). To me, these donuts are more like cakes instead of your typical donut. I am not going to argue with that, though! Despite not actually being a donut, Fōnuts are excellent for breakfast or even for dessert. And they are still perfect to go with your hot coffee (or in my case, hot cocoa).
*If you also have a nut allergy, be sure to ask which flavors contain almond flour when you visit.
