Christmas in Macau // Wynn Palace

I know the Christmas season has quickly come and gone once again, but that doesn’t mean it’s too early to start thinking about next year’s holiday travel plans, right? This year, the beau and I got to finally visit Macau together in the lead up to Christmas. Macau had been on my list pretty much as soon as I first visited Hong Kong, but with the pandemic that was impossible until earlier this year after both Macau and Hong Kong reopened their borders. Christmas is a magical time to visit Macau, so we figured this was the perfect time for my first visit. The special administrative region is decked out from head to toe in Christmas decor, and you can hear Christmas music as you walk down the street especially in Cotai.

I had been told by many people that Macau would remind me of Las Vegas, and they were correct. In fact, while I was in Macau, there were quite a few times I had to remind myself I was not in Las Vegas (and not attending a pageant!). While the main city of Macau is full of Macanese history and Portuguese architecture, Cotai is where it most resembles Las Vegas. The streets are lit in magnificent colors, you can visit Paris, London, and Venice all in one day, and the casinos are full of visitors hoping for some gambling luck. And then there’s the hotel with the gorgeous lake and magical fountains out front, the Wynn Palace, that draws visitors in with its fountain shows, gondola ride over the lake, and the fabulous restaurants and hotel that await guests inside.

the hotel: Wynn Palace

Opened in 2016, Wynn Palace is famous not only for its Performance Lake fountain shows out front, but also for being the only hotel with over 1000 rooms to have a Forbes Five-Star award, the hotel spa being awarded a Forbes Five-Star award, plus they also have more Forbes Five-Star restaurants than any other hotel in the world: Mizumi/Sushi Mizumi, SW Steakhouse, and Sichuan Moon (temporarily closed as of December 2023). From the moment we entered the impressive south lobby of Wynn Palace, we were immediately greeted by Christmas trees flanking the front doors and a beautiful floral display by Preston Bailey that reveals a phoenix emerging from the petals. Our room was the brightly colored, super spacious Fountain Suite, which overlooked Performance Lake.

Dinner at SW Steakhouse

We began our Macau journey shortly after checking in with dinner at SW Steakhouse, a Forbes Five Star Award winning restaurant. It was my first time away from little bean in over 5 months, so I was feeling a bit down, but the beau and I dressed up and took advantage of some alone time for the evening by starting off with some drinks at the bar. I started off with a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon while the beau indulged in a cocktail dubbed “The Chairman.” After chatting with the bartender, and doing our best not to talk about our daughter the entire time, we were escorted to our table near the main stage where animatronic performances occur every 30 minutes. Our host graciously surprised us with a wine pairing to accompany our multi-course dinner, which featured fresh seafood, ravioli, wagyu, and macaroni and cheese. As we dined, we noticed the elegant steakhouse was hosting not just couples sharing a date night, but also families and friends. It’s a great spot to indulge after a busy day in Macau, especially at Christmastime.

After having a good night’s sleep, we still naturally woke up at 6 am (thank you, parenthood). After a slow start in our suite, we made our way downstairs to Fontana for their expansive international breakfast buffet. There are western options, Portuguese options, and Chinese options. I was particularly excited to see the noodle bar, as delicious, fresh shrimp wontons awaited me. Since moving to Asia, I flock to savory for breakfast more often than sweet, although I did have to grab a few egg tarts because, after all, I was in Macau.

Lunch at Lakeview Palace

Using French culinary techniques to bring you the best flavors of Jiangnan through Sichuan inspired cuisine, Lakeview Palace blew us away with their multi-course lunch with a prime view of Performance Lake and the fountain shows. Lately, I’ve been finding myself craving Sichuan cuisine more and more, aka I like a certain spice to my dishes. I used to be so nervous to eat new cuisines because of my numerous allergies, but Lakeview Palace took my allergies and dietary restrictions seriously and still gave me an exceptional experience. It always comforts me when a restaurant is able to cater to my allergies, since it’s perfectly reasonable if they choose not to because sometimes substitutions can really alter a dish (some of my allergies include all nuts, coriander, and scallops – zero chance of having XO sauce unless it’s vegetarian – and I do not eat pork). The chef at Lakeview Palace made us custom dishes of wagyu, lotus root, hot and sour crab soup (very comforting on my throat as some symptoms from a previous virus were still annoying me), noodles, and one of the best desserts I’ve had all year – chocolate ice cream mixed with chili flakes and Chinese wine.

For two nights in the days leading up to Christmas, staying at the Wynn Palace in Macau certainly made me feel like Christmas was in the air. From Christmas music playing throughout the hotel, to the special menus at restaurants dedicated to Christmas, and to the magical Christmas decor that was on display throughout, it made me a little disappointed that we did not get to bring little bean on this trip to see it for herself. However, there were so many other families having such an exciting time and it was so touching to see, so a trip to Macau at Christmas is most definitely in little bean’s future. If you’re already looking for ideas for Christmas next year, put Macau on your list.

Thank you to Wynn Palace for inviting us. Although we were guests of Wynn Palace, all my opinions are my own.
