UNFILTERED THOUGHTS ABOUT MOVING ABROAD:

I lived in Los Angeles for almost 10 years by the time I got divorced at 29. I was preparing to move back to New York City when I began dating the beau. I had met the beau in Canada but he called Hong Kong his home, as that’s where his parents and where his job was. It’s also where he was raised. I took a giant leap of faith and less than 6 months into our relationship, I moved 8000 miles away from everyone I knew and loved to a whole new continent. Very extreme. Very impulsive. Very Aries.

When the pandemic began, I struggled with life in HK. I’ve shared about this before. I began to wonder if I had made a mistake and I was considering moving back to the US. But I did not want to be in a long distance relationship with the beau for an unknown amount of time. After a lot of personal therapy and couples therapy, I chose to stay.

I became pregnant in early 2022, and this is where my struggles about moving abroad hit its peak. I was extremely lonely during my pregnancy. None of my family and friends in the US got to see me pregnant. None of them got to touch my belly or even be there for me during and after the birth. It wasn’t until little bean was 6 months old that I finally got to hug my family for the first time in 4 years.

It was my choice to move abroad, and I willingly chose this life. At 35 living in Hong Kong, I finally feel like I’m growing into the woman I’m meant to be. I’ve created a beautiful life for myself and I’m raising a wonderful human being alongside the man I love. But it aches my heart that my family isn’t here to see the little world I’ve created for myself. It hurts so much that in the 5.5 years I’ve lived in HK, not one family member and not one friend has visited. I’ve trekked across the Pacific and back 10 times over the last 2 years with a baby, but I want the ones I love to see where I live and how I’ve finally found the place I feel happy in, just so they know I’m doing okay. Maybe they’d even be proud of me.

Moving abroad isn’t easy. It really isn’t for the faint of heart. But I would still choose this life again and again. This is where I’m meant to be… for now.
