For those of you who don’t know, my grandfather immigrated from Denmark in the 1950s (he was born in a small town called Espergærde just outside Helsingør). When T and I decided to take our month-long trip across Europe, I asked him if we could please stop in Copenhagen so I could pay tribute to my Morfar (who sadly passed away in 2000). Like myself, T has never been to Denmark before so he was very excited about the idea. Upon leaving London, I changed into a comfortable striped sweatshirt by Ganni, a Danish label, for my arrival into Copenhagen. On our first day, we spent the morning exploring Amalienborg (the official residence of the Danish royal family), Nyhavn, and some quiet side streets just outside Indre By (the city center) where we got to take some pics for this post. After spending the last 24 years seeing everything in pictures and hearing stories about Denmark from my Morfar as a child, I was beyond excited to be able to admire Denmark with my own two eyes. We had a wonderful weekend in Denmark planned – Tivoli, Torvehallerne, Chrisiansborg and Rosenborg palaces, Blue Planet Aquarium, Strøget, and of course a visit to my Morfar’s hometown of Espergærde. Unfortunately, none of those planned visits would happen – I fell severely ill the afternoon of our first day and had to remain in bed in our hotel for the remainder of our trip to Denmark (a trip to the hospital was also involved). Heartbroken and utterly crushed are understatements to describe how I feel about not being able to fully explore and take in my heritage and my roots, which was the point of this leg in our trip. I hope I get the chance to come back someday. It took me 24 years to get here in the first place – here’s to hoping it doesn’t take 24 more to return!

I would have been devastated! How awful! I hope you are feeling better and I’m sure you will be back soon. 🙂
Thank you, Rachel. It was pretty devastating. But from what I did see of Denmark, I absolutely loved it and despite all that happened I can still say I did get to visit Denmark. Just not how I wanted! I plan on returning again someday.
So pretty! Love your classic stripes. hope you guys are enjoying Europe! xox
Thanks Grace! You and I have an addiction to stripes – another thing we have in common! xoxo
